Strong storms possible today

Another day of a few afternoon showers and thunderstorms is expected today. Much of SE TX and southern LA will see a good 30% coverage of thunderstorms this afternoon. Much like the last couple days, thunderstorms could produce some gusty winds, lightning and heavy downpours. They should last very long.

There is a disturbance rolling out of NW TX that is expected to be a focus of some strong storms. The greatest risk of impact from these strong storms are currently looking to be near and west of Houston, but its really hard to pin down the timing and exact location. Stronger storms that do end up developing over the Houston area could produce locally strong wind gusts, frequent lightning and very heavy downpours. The strong wind gusts could reach over 40 mph in some areas. Below is where the Storm Prediction Center is highlighting the greatest risk of damaging thunderstorm wind gusts. The yellow area denotes a 15% chance of damaging wind gusts within 25 miles. Brown area is the 5% area. I don't see any reason to disagree with their forecast, but I will say there does remain a great deal of uncertain based on the models this morning being very inconsistent with the thunderstorm placement. I can't rule out western Louisiana seeing isolated strong storms as well.
